Life today is all about look, right? Though we all know there is more to life than just what we see. Although obese fat people is a less fashionable look it is unhealthy for all emotional and psychological reasons, for any person on a personal level. What does the word obesity really imply?

BMI (body mass index), was developed by the Belgian statistician and anthropometrist Adolphe Quetelet in 1840. Which means that a person’s height and weight is measured. These numbers are then used to calculate another number, the BMI.

It is calculated by dividing a persons weight in kilograms by the square of a persons height in meters (BMI = kg/m2). BMI serves to show the amount of fat stored on the body. The higher your BMI is, the worst is your exposure to certain diseases.

The agreed table established in 1997 (published in 2000) and currently in use:

  • BMI less than 18.5 is underweight
  • BMI of 18.5 - 24.9 is normal weight
  • BMI of 30.0 - 39.9 is obese
  • BMI of 40.0 or higher is severely obese


What really causes obesity?

Obesity is only made possible when the energy intake exceeds energy expenditure by more than it does for individuals of "normal weight". When food intake (which is energy for the body), exceeds the use or expenditure of that energy. Cells throughout the body take in the energy and store it (to a lesser extent muscle and liver cells).

These cells become obese cells becoming in turn an obese body. In its simplest form it comes to eating to much and moving to little. People gain weight when the body takes in more calories than it burns off. People who become obese usually have been getting more calories than they need for years. Overeating is the dominant cause of obesity.

Factors which contribute to developing obesity, are:

  • Genetic disorders (e.g., Prader-Willi syndrome)
  • Underlying illness (e.g., hypothyroidism)
  • Eating disorders (e.g., binge eating disorder)
  • Certain medications (e.g., atypical antipsychotics)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Glycemic diet (i.e., a diet that consists of meals that give high postprandial blood sugar)
  • Weight cycling, caused by repeated attempts to lose weight by dieting
  • Stressful mentality
  • Insufficient sleep
  • Smoking cessation


Weight problems most often arise from a combination of habits, fueled emotions and genetic factors. Boredom, stress, sadness, depression and anxiety are upsetting factors which tend to make people eat more. This develops into a habit, creating a cycle tough to break for obese fat people.

What happens is, after you eat to much you feel so bad about it that you then eat more to try and deal with those bad feelings. Denial becomes part of the reality, thinking you are fonder of food and eating than others. The extra weight tends to make people less active, which, in turn, means more weight is put on.

A sedentary lifestyle is an important factor of weight gain and an easy habit to lunge into. People are much less active today than they used to be, with many factors affecting our way of life. Technology which has made life so much easier has been dominating our lives and is detrimental to our weight. Real couch potato style to be quite frank causes obese fat people. Life has become much busier on the intellectual level and much less active on the physical level.

What is the outcome of obesity?

It does not mean you have to become a health junky because that can also be going over the top. The decision with action is only for you to grasp or to clarify for yourself.

Is there something to do, if you are overweight or obese?

Firstly don't starve yourself because you won't get the nutrients you need for living energy. Find someone you can trust to talk to, a doctor, a parent, or a registered dietitian. Ask for help, don’t deny your problem. Its like the example of an alcoholic, as long as there is denial and excuses they can’t be helped. Face the truth, accept it and then commit yourself to healthy actions.

A food and activity journal might be of help. Keep track of what you eat, when you exercise, and how you feel. Changes take time, but seeing your progress in writing will help you stick to your plan. You might also want to consider attending a support group. A lot depends on who you are. Groups might not work for your. Maybe you are a one on one person.

There is no mistake in being who you are. Find what agrees with you! Because you can! Above all, surround yourself with friends and family who will be there for you and help you tackle these important changes in your life (those who value and believe in you! Cut out those who don’t!). Often people with the same problems take each other down instead of helping each other up. Find the wisdom before you choose. Contemplation and research helps understanding all of this.

Obesity can be cured! As bleak as it might look. Effort and patients are the golden rule. It is never too late to make changes. Eating and exercise habits do control your weight, and those changes don't have to be overnight or as big as you might think. Remember: “What you think about you bring about. Thoughts become things….so choose the good ones!”
